Rumuokwurusi Bridge partially collapsed: Julius Berger in Trouble

Engineering Construction Company of note, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc came under fire on Sunday in Port Harcourt following the collapse of the Rumuokwurusi flyover still under construction in the state capital.

The bridge contracted to Julius Berger February this year was due to be completed later this month but for the weekend incident.

Sources disclosed that some clearance work was being done at the point close to a supporting beam before the latter fell off causing the entire portion to sink below.

The incident caused widespread panic in the area, according to eye witnesses.

Though no injuries or lives were lost, the development had caused concerned people in the state to call for “a special infrastructural audit of the company’s works, including their roads, bridges and buildings to determine their quality and the standard of materials being used by Julius Berger.”

A top chief in Estate area of Woji in the city queried the calibre of the company’s staff working on the project saying, “if it is true that a worker was using some machinery to do some work and accidentally knocked off the affected beam, it means that staff and indeed, all of them working on that site are incompetent.”

He added that “people will now be scared of the company’s works here as we are beginning to doubt their ability.”
