•Governor: ‘New Era Project Has Left Lasting Footprints In Lagos’

The Spelling Bee Competition held yearly for secondary school pupils across Lagos State has left lasting legacy and positive footprints on education in the State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Wednesday.

The Governor said the competition, since inception in 2000, had promoted access to quality learning which offered secondary school pupils from humble backgrounds an opportunity to be on the same education pedestal with their mates from rich homes.

He said the English language competition had come of age, transforming lives through revolutionary changes it brought to public speaking and vocabulary spelling.

Sanwo-Olu spoke at the official handover of 10,000 units of Spelling Bee dictionaries freely distributed to public schools across the State by New Era Foundation – the organiser of the Spelling Bee Contest.

The Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), is the pet project of the former First Lady of the State, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, who is now a third-term lawmaker representing Lagos Central in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

The Governor and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, personally took delivery of the education materials from Sen. Tinubu at an event held at the State House in Alausa.

Sanwo-Olu said: “The story of the New Era Foundation has been revolutionary in the education sector since its inception. I have personally been part of the New Era Foundation family for decades and I’m opportune to witness how this simple seed germinated to transform the lives of young people through education and value reorientation.

“The Foundation has trained and mentored several young people who have excelled excellently in various fields of knowledge. There have been several First Class graduates that have been produced from this simple intervention of the Spelling Bee Competition, giving them opportunity to showcase their knowledge in different parts of the world.

“Through this project, many young people from various humble backgrounds have had opportunity to transform their lives and business environment. We will continue to appreciate the progress this novel idea that our mother has brought to us in education in the last 20 years.”

Sanwo-Olu described the Senator as “a caring mother” in Lagos education family, reiterating his administration’s commitment to working with the Foundation to further initiate actions that will help the Government to solve challenges bedeviling education in the State.

He said the State Government would continue to create development opportunities for public school pupils, adding that public speaking and diction tasks would be bolstered across schools to imbue confidence in students in Government schools.

Sanwo-Olu praised the former First Lady for the donation of the dictionaries, saying English learning remained a strong tool that could define what students become in future.

He said: “The donation is simple but historic. This is another demonstration of Sen. Tinubu’s love for our children and education system. We will see the footprints of this intervention both in primary and secondary schools, because English learning is a strong tool that can define what students become in future.”

Sen. Tinubu gave a pass mark to the Sanwo-Olu administration on teachers’ training and retraining, saying the effort had improved the delivery of quality education in Lagos.

The lawmaker said the Spelling Bee contest was not the Foundation’s only intervention initiated in education in Lagos. She said the NGO had supported Lagos Government in school renovation, and provision of learning materials and laboratory equipment.

She said: “I must commend the administration under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the stride achieved in education within a short period. It is worthy of mention that the training and retraining of teachers has boosted morale and improve service delivery. This effort and many other interventions by successive administrations have improved academic rating of our public schools.”

Sen. Tinubu urged the Government to beam a special focus on education to prevent the Coronavirus pandemic to erode the progress recorded since 1999.

The timing of the dictionaries’ donation, the lawmaker said, coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Foundation and the Spelling Bee Competition, pointing out that the NGO has been nurturing young people to lead social change and achieve their potential through targeted education and leisure activities.

She said: “Today, we are donating 10,000 copies of the Spelling Bee Dictionary to the State Government. The dictionary contains all words used in the Spelling Bee competition from its inception to date. It is our hope that it will help improve vocabularies and dictions of the public school children.”

Sen. Tinubu urged wealthy citizens and corporate organisation to partner with the Government to ensure essential requirements needed in the education sector are provided, stressing that the responsibility of educating the society must not be left to the Government alone.

Miss Boluwatife Tijani, a student of Vetland Senior Grammar School in Agege, expressed words of appreciation to Senator Tinubu on behalf of the public school children in the State.

The dictionaries comprise words being used in primary and secondary classes.

Other top Government officials at the event included the Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, Special Adviser on Education, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, and chairman of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King, among others.

•Grants Three-Year Waiver On Penalty For Land Use Charge Defaulters

•Lagos Governor Meets Business Leaders

With the approval of N1 billion seed capital for investment in tourism, Lagos State is set to drive a new growth in hospitality business. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the approval of the loan on Wednesday at the 6th Lagos Corporate Assembly held at the Banquet Hall in the State House, Alausa.

The Governor said the investment was required to bolster the hospitality sector by providing key operators in tourism business with soft loans to boost their capacity in driving growth. The initiative, Sanwo-Olu observed, is necessary to position tourism business as a new frontier for job creation and economic prosperity in the post-Coronavirus era.

The seed capital will be domiciled in the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), the Governor said, adding that the funds will be made available specifically to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) operators in the sector.

The Governor said the State would also be collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to further create access for fund to support the hospitality business.

The event with the theme: “BOS Meets Business, was attended by the captains of industry, manufacturers, and members of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

Besides, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the State had started the first phase of the 6,000km optical fibre being laid across Lagos, with the aim of providing technological infrastructure to support MSMEs.

He said the State had continued to strengthen its Ease of Doing Business policies to drive private investment and economic growth. This, he said, is being made possible by the digitisation of business registration and asset acquisition processes, which, he said, removed administrative bottlenecks.

He said: “We have just given approval for N1 billion support that will be given out through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to support hospitality business in the State. The beneficiaries of this fund will go through screening in line with the requirement of the agency. We are making this investment because of the huge potential for job creation and inclusive growth this sector can bring about.

“We will be working with the CBN for more funding to fully develop the potential of our tourism sector. This effort is being completed with the rolling out of 3,000 km optical fibre across the State to provide technological infrastructure for the MSMEs whose operations would depend on fast Internet networks to drive their businesses.”

With Lagos’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) valued at $130 billion and over three million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which make the State the fourth wealthiest city in Africa, Sanwo-Olu said it was time for the State to strengthen its economy with right policies for accelerated growth and prosperity.

The Governor said there will be a review of the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in the State by the Federal Government in response to requests by businesses across the State, noting that the ongoing rehabilitation of major bridges and roads had impacted business activities in the State.

Sanwo-Olu said the repeal of 2018 Laws on Land Use Charge was to further create incentives for more growth in the corporate sector, stressing that the new Land Use laws had addressed controversial provisions and remove ambiguity in the levies paid by companies in Lagos.

The Governor granted a three-year waiver on penalty for those that defaulted the payment of land use charge from 2017. He also offered a 25 per cent discount for those who make early payment of the Land Use.

He said: “We are granting a waiver of three years in late payment, which covers 2017, 2018 and 2019. We are also giving 25 per cent special discount on early payment. By this, we have achieved a 48 per cent reduction for businesses in chargeable rates by repealing the 2018 Land Use Laws.

“We are taking these steps to show that we are not being insensitive to the plight of businesses and residents, especially in this period of pandemic that have slowed down activities. We have been doing everything possible to make sure businesses are not choked by taxes.”

Sanwo-Olu told the business leaders and MSMEs operators to see his administration as a “real partner” in driving growth. He said the Government would continue to introduce more incentives to strengthen its partnership with the private sector to keep Lagos economy on the path of growth.

Representatives of corporate organisations praised the Governor for the reviews of the Land Use Laws. They, however, called for harmonisation of taxes and levies payable to the Government.

Deputy President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Chief Olawale Cole, hailed the State Government for the three-month moratorium given to MSMEs, noting that the incentive would stimulate more commitment in the sector.

Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Corporative, Dr. Lola Akande, noted that Lagos Government had taken steps since the last meeting with the Organised Private Sector to sustain the momentum of growth.

She said: “We recognise that creating an enabling business environment is the key to job creation, poverty eradication and growth of the State economy. Lagos State is positioned to support businesses and industrial sector to maximise their potential for greater contribution to the State’s GDP.”

2020: Edo Youths warn Oshiomhole

· Say former APC National chairman working against God

Youths in Edo State on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki for taking the state out of the woods and placing it on the world map for good.

They also thanked him for running a transparent and accountable government.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki has performed excellently to the envy of Adams Oshiomhole and other foes. He has not misappropriated public funds and will never do it” the young men and women under the aegis of the Edo Youth Movement said.

Chairman of Edo Youth Movement, Dr. Gabriel Obanor in a statement in Benin said the youths eulogized Obaseki for being above board in the discharge of his duties.

The statement commended Obaseki for pursuing justice, creating opportunities for them and providing meaningful developmental projects across the state as well as ensuring equity and fairness in appointment to political offices.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki wants to make Edo State prosperous. He is moving with great zeal and vigour to make the difference.”

The youths advised Oshiomhole and his co-travellers to define the objectives and strategies of their political campaigns more clearly than degenerating to abuses, lies and wild allegations.

“We have a governor with a listening ear. We have a governor that is committed to the development of the state. We have a governor that is providing responsible, accountable and transparent leadership to the people.

They thanked the governor for embarking on measures to protect the environment and making it safer for the people.

They also congratulated the governor for the massive infrastructural development Edo State has witnessed in the last forty three months.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki has over time built for himself the integrity for redeeming promises made to the people. He will continue to work for the interest of the good people of Edo State”

Particularly, the youths praised Obaseki for his honesty and bravery in the management of the state as well as his inclusive strategy.

The youths appealed to the electorate to vote the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying Oshiomhole and his associates are working against God and the good people of Edo State.

“Edo State is not a breeding ground for irresponsible politicians, dissidents and men who know little and care more about their selfish interest. Governor Godwin Obaseki will execute more people oriented programmes in his second term” the youths said.

Obaseki is the most reasonable in the history of Edo State – Benjamin Atu

Obaseki is the most reasonable in the history of Edo State – Benjamin Atu

Senior Special Assistant on Media to Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Benjamin Atu, on Monday accused former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole of spreading lies.

He also deflated allegations leveled against Governor Godwin Obaseki by Oshiomhole, saying the governor is running a government based on honesty and fairness.

“In Edo State, the people have seen hopes maturing to reality. War on crime has been declared and that fight has been won. The rule of law is respected in Edo State. Public servants are properly paid. The government has put smiles on the faces of the people by executing policies and programmes that have direct impact in the lives of the people. The government has invested in education, health; sports, rural development, security, infrastructure, energy and agriculture and the benefits are there for all to see. ”

Atu spoke in Benin when some youths visited him in his office.

He described as irresponsible the campaign of calumny by Adams Oshiomhole and his associates.

‘’Governor Godwin Obaseki is the most reasonable in the history of Edo State. In forty three months, Governor Godwin Obaseki has much to look back to with pride. In his pursuit of integrity and dignity, he has never compromised. In forty three months, he created a new image for the state. In forty three months, he freed millions trapped in the prison of poverty. Today, the state’s economy is growing. The budget is well implemented. The cabinet is all inclusive. Corruption has been tackled head-on” he said.

The senior media dismissed the recent statement of Adams Oshiomhole on modular refinery and consultancy.

“The statement is wide, off the mark and misconceived. It is also extremely contradictory in a number of areas, thus exposing the high level of ignorance of Adams Oshiomhole about the true state of affairs in Edo State.

He advised Oshiomhole to be more decent with his choice of words.

“The good people of Edo State have reasons to be grateful to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his contributions to the growth and development of the state. There is improvement in the lives of the people. The number of unemployed young adults has reduced’.

Atu extolled the virtues of the governor, emphasizing that his visionary, exemplary and transformational leadership has taken Edo State to an all-time high level since 2016.

“We know that posterity will be on the side of Governor Obaseki for the good works he is doing in Edo State just as we know that the founding fathers of the state believe he has surpassed their expectations in less than forty three months.”

Atu said like a pathfinder, the governor within forty three months charted a new course of development for the people of Edo State.

“His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, is passionate, emotional and sensitive. He is dedicated and fearless. He is a fighter for good governance and transparency. He is the born leader of the masses”.

Atu spoke on the governor’s dogged commitment to principles in the practice of politics, the rule of law and the best democratic tradition of fairness and justice.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki believes in merit and places priority on the welfare of the people. His administration follows due process in the award of contracts. Edo State has never had it so good in terms of provision of amenities and infrastructure since the creation of the state” he said.

Why Ize-Iyamu will never be governor, by Edo Elders

Why Ize-Iyamu will never be governor, by Edo Elders

· Restate opposition

Piqued by the political violence near the palace of the Oba of Benin on Saturday, prominent leaders in Edo State on Sunday carpeted the All Progressives Congress (APC) for creating crisis in the state.

They also commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for the feats recorded in the state.

In a meeting in Benin, the leaders resolved to remain firm in their opposition to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Gani Audu.

The 160 member forum pointed accusing fingers at some APC chieftains in the state, who they alleged were engineering political violence with a view to destabilizing the parts of the state which rejected the APC gubernatorial candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and his running mate, Gani Audu.

‘’Godwin Obaseki and Phillip Shaibu dislocated the support base of APC chieftains in Edo State’’ the elders said.

In a statement after the meeting in Benin City, the leaders called on political associates of former APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to understand the processes of political development and change.

Particularly, the leaders appealed to the youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used by disgruntled politicians to cause mayhem that could derail the electoral process.

Signed by Chief Innocent Momoh, the leaders alleged that some APC chieftains were masterminding crisis in the state continually for political reasons.

Referring to the ugly event near the palace of the Benin monarch, the leaders alleged that supporters of Oshiomhole and Ize-Iyamu fired deadly weapons at the good people of Edo State.

The leaders also emphasized Obaseki’s firm control over the political machinery of the state, the solid network of allies that he has and the followership he is attracting based on his performance and leadership style.

They urged Ize-Iyamu to clear himself of the corruption charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and statements credited to the former APC national chairman.

‘’There had been a lot of questions about his past records and he should be ashamed that his name is mentioned in relation to corruption, of wrong doings and improper behavior in this country. He has to claim responsibility for his past actions and seek forgiveness from the good people of Edo State’’.

The elders from the eighteen local government areas said they reinstated their position taken last month in Auchi.

‘’Ize-Iyamu is not the kind of creature that the state wants. Pastor Ize-Iyamu will not be the governor of Edo State’’ the leaders said.

The notable leaders under the aegis of the Edo Elders Forum (EEF) have been in forefront of the anti-electoral violence campaign ahead of the September governorship election
